How did you choose your favorite genre as a writer?

I have never written this genre before but love reading it, so decided to be brave and give it a try.

It was really fun implying the “fantasy” world within the real one. Where you get that reasonable doubt that the fantasy may be possible. The paranormal genre has a natural fluidity for a series and I was looking to write one, so it was a perfect blend.

What inspired this particular story?

Greek mythology has always been an interest of mine because the stories are so fantastic and magical. The characters are all complete messes really, even though they’re gods. I loved the idea of gods needing help from us mere mortals, so it began there. I also liked the idea of having the modern-day story remaining primarily modern rather than switching between worlds too much. It’s just a slightly different take on it.

Tell us about your journey from aspiring writer to debut author.

I’ve always thought in stories and pictures. My imagination was always very vibrant and I loved to read and enter those “other” worlds. I never thought about writing until I was older and walking one day. My father-in-law was very ill and I was taking a break from caring for him. I had an idea for a story and the character wouldn’t stop talking in my head. When I got home, the kids were in school and I didn’t have anything going on so decided to write it down. At one point, I looked up and four hours had passed! I decided to play it out and in three days had a somewhat fleshed out story. I sat on it for a long time, just being busy with my active family and job. People read it and encouraged me to, “do something with it.” However, it wasn’t until my son (who isn’t a big reader), read it and said he wanted me to publish it. I decided to try and, “The Catch,” was created. I fell in love with the craft and then came the metamorphosis of The Heaven & Earth Series and The Sea Archer. I went to the RWA conferences where full or partial manuscripts were requested from the various New York agents and publishers I presented to and made the choice to go with The Wild Rose Press and the result is or hopefully in your hands, The Sea Archer.

What’s your favorite part of the writing life?

Without a doubt being in the zone. When you have nothing but quiet, undeterred time ahead of you and a head full of ideas. Of course, the worst is when you have a head full of ideas and can’t sit down to write uninterrupted! However, at least for me characters vie for time and attention and it’s always wonderful when you can take all those voices out of your head and translate the message on paper.

Any advice for aspiring writers?

Yes, just write! Even if you only have small amounts of time. Don’t let anyone tell you it’s too hard or you can’t. A wonderful well known writer once said to me that everyone has a story to tell but not everyone chooses to listen or believes in their story enough to write it down. And if you don’t write it down, how will anyone know it. It’s a simple message but very true. Also, don’t be in it for the money, do it because you love it or you love the story but don’t start thinking of the movie they’ll make or the millions you will earn. Have it come from a pure place and the rest won’t even matter.

What do you do for fun, besides writing?

Oh, I’m all about family. My immediate family and my extended family, which includes friends. Besides my family and friends, I love photography and have that as a side business when I have time. I also love to travel and would love to see the world. Anything creative makes heart happy!

Author Bio:

Jeny Heckman, loves romance. She especially loves romance with a paranormal and/or historical twist. Educated as an artist, banker, sales clerk, draftsman, charity fundraiser, jewelry maker, nursing student, hospice volunteer, photographer, mother, and wife, she felt her calling lay elsewhere. While taking care of an ailing loved one, she was inspired to write her first novel entitled, The Catch, about a female Alaskan crab fisherman, and self-publish it. Wanting to try something very different she pitched an idea to a New York agent who told her to run with it. This book is the first of that seven-part endeavor. When not ignoring her family and friends by writing you will find her time exclusively on them and photography. Jeny lives in Stanwood, Washington, with her husband of over twenty-five years.
