Our weekly prompt from the Marketing for Romance Authors 52-week blog challenge has me scratching my head, because reading and writing ARE living. Would you tell a guitarist she’s not living if she’s listening to music or playing same? Would you tell a sports enthusiast she wasn’t living if you found her playing soccer or watching a game? Pish-tosh. (My favorite dismissive expression—I try to use it in every novel I write.)
Of course, reading and writing are not the sum total of living, just a big chunk (in my case). I do try to spend time outdoors every day, as well as talking to actual, breathing people. But I must admit, I sometimes get resentful and cranky when the demands of daily life intrude on my time with my imaginary friends. That’s when I know it’s time to step away from my computer or close the book. After all, balance is important.
How about you? Do you see reading and writing as apart from living? Do you find it easy to balance time spent in your head with time spent in the “real” world?

Writing has the most weight in my balance, but one day I hope to equal it out and enjoy life in different ways. I get the part about being cranky when interrupted. Enjoy your weekend, Sadira. (love that name)
Writers and musicians, I think, tend to live in their heads and that may distract us from being present in other ways.
Reading and writing have always been an important part of my life, but as I get older, I sometimes wonder if the time I’ve devoted to these mostly solitary pursuits verges on self-indulgence, so I now make a conscious effort to do more things with the people who matter most to me.
I think all three are related, and I completely agree that to a writer, writing is part of life. I don’t worry about whether I spend too much time writing. I’ve always been more a loner than a people person and it’s never been a problem for me. Whatever makes you feel happy and fulfilled is how you should live, and that’s different for each person.
