I have to chuckle at this week’s prompt from the Marketing for Romance Writers blog challenge. Since removing Facebook and Twitter from my phone, I actually don’t spend a lot of time staring at the little tyrant. Those apps were huge time-wasters, tempting me to sneak a glimpse at far-away “friends” instead of focusing on the person/scene right in front of me.
Ah, but “they” tell me Instagram is great for helping authors connect with readers, and IG works best from a phone, not a laptop. I’m dipping my toes in–let’s see how well I can resist the siren song of portable social media this time. There’s lots to learn before I start posting photos of–what, exactly? My books with coffee mugs? Flowers? Random cute men on the street? Puppies? Wine? Please, I beg you, send me some ideas.
My phone screen is pretty bare, compared to most. I do enjoy
- The built-in step counter.
- The map app. How did we ever find our way around without this?
- The messaging app, for sending bad jokes and photos to faraway family.
- Podcasts, Audible, and Overdrive, for entertaining me on walks, at the gym, or during housework.
That’s it. Pretty boring, eh?
Since I have so little to say on this week’s topic, here are a few really bad jokes about romance:
It was so hot today, I almost called my ex-boyfriend to be around something shady.
Don’t break anybody’s heart; they only have one. Break their bones; they have 206.
Bubba goes to see his friend Earl. He finds Earl in his barn dancing naked around his John Deere. “What are you doing?” asks Bubba. Earl stops dancing & says, “My wife isn’t interested in lovin’ lately. I talked to my big brother, and he said I needed to do something sexy to a tractor.” (Get it? I love me a bad pun.)
Do you use lots of apps for fun, connection, or to help manage your time? What are your favorites?

‘Til then, have a great weekend!
I agree with you on the beauty of GPS. Google Maps is wonderful, Magellan sucks.
If you want to work with IG from your laptop or computer vs. your phone, check out Later. You can schedule as many posts ahead as you like, but you will need to make your IG a business account. You can also link it to Twitter or your FB page for basically 1 post a day for free. If you purchase Later’s premium account for individuals at $9 month, you get 100 posts to Instagram and FB per month. (See: https://later.com/pricing/) I tend to do around 2 per day. 1 as a promo, and one for writer inspiration. You can find me at https://www.instagram.com/kathrynrblake/ – I’ll see if I can find you and follow you as well. Hope this helps. BTW-I’m not affiliated with Later in any way, I simply needed a way to schedule my posts from my computer since I don’t have a smart phone and using my tablet was a pain.
Thanks for the tip, Kathryn! I haven’t yet finished setting up my IG account. Will work on that next week, and I’ll look for you.
I’m not on Instagram but I’d like to hear how it goes for you because I think I’d like to be on it. I’m not familiar with the map app if you are talking about a particular map called map app. I need maps for everything in my life. Good luck with IG!
Love the romance jokes! My favorite apps are for tracking food and finances. The one I use most, though, is the Amazon Kindle app.
