‘Tis the season for New Year’s resolutions. Rather than list measurable, concrete goals for the coming year, I choose a focus word or words.

Alas, I didn’t do anything to remind myself of last year’s focus word; if fact, until a moment ago I couldn’t even remember that it was Health. Grade on that goal: C-.

This year’s goals, front and center on my bulletin board.

My messy corkboard is where I store important reminders and items in progress. Voilà! A colorful sign to catch my interest, messy to remind my that my efforts don’t have to be perfect. So, my goals for 2020 are (make your own drumroll)

  1. Connect! As a work-at-home writer and introvert, it’s easy to neglect connection to other humans, especially the ones I can look at face to face or talk to on the phone. Social media does provide some connection, but I can and will do much better at maintaining ties with IRL friends/family, as well as building new IRL connections. Connecting with fascinating people brings me joy.
  2. Food! Cooking, eating, and sharing delicious food brings me joy, but lately I’ve been making the same old easy, comfortable meals. In 2020, I’ll delve into my long-neglected collection of cookbooks, cooking magazines, favorite cooking websites, and clipped recipes. I’ll even share some original recipes here. Bon appétit!
  3. Music! I’ve been “learning” guitar and ukulele for a few years now, but haven’t stretched my skills beyond basic strumming. Blessed with a musical family and friends, I’m challenging myself to build my skills and learn new songs.

Our New Year’s Even celebration will be simple: at a friend’s house, we write on slips of paper what we want to say good-bye to in 2020, then toss those into the fire pit. Afterward, we’ll gather around the fire, weather permitting, play guitars and sing in the new year. There will be munchies galore and too much wine, and we’ll have a grand time.
