The holiday season is in full swing, and what better way to celebrate than reading a holiday romance? Today I’m welcoming back guest author Jennifer Wilck, who’s here to tell us about her new Hanukkah romance Waiting for a Miracle.
Benjamin Cohen, widowed
father of six-year-old Jessie, is doing his best to hold it together through
order and routine. The last thing he needs is his matchmaker mother to set him
up with her next door neighbor, no matter how attractive she is.
Rachel Schaecter’s dream of becoming a foster mother is right within her grasp,
until her meddlesome neighbor tries to set her up with her handsome son. What’s
worse? He’s the father of her favorite kindergarten student! She can’t afford
to let anything come between her and her dream, no matter how gorgeous he may
be.
Can these two determined people trust in the miracle of Hanukkah to let love
and light into their lives?
Excerpt
Jessie pulled at his elbow, preventing him from any further thoughts. “Where does our menorah go, Daddy?” With a smile, he gave it to her and pointed to the banquet beneath the dining room window. His mother lined it with foil so dripping wax wouldn’t ruin the wood finish.
“Right there.”
Jessie took the menorah and candles and placed it with care next to the big silver one already in place.
He handed the plate of cookies to his mother.
“I helped bake them, grandma.”
“You did?” His mother sniffed them. “I can’t wait to eat them. They smell delicious.”
Satisfied everything was taken care of, he turned to Jessie. “So, where are these menorahs you wanted to show me?”
Jessie glowed. She took his hand and led him into the living room. The floor to ceiling bookcase, filled with the mysteries his mother loved, now also displayed every menorah they’d ever used. There were intricate silver ones from her childhood and hand-painted ceramic ones from his time in religious school. A brass one that was a wedding gift when his parents married.
The Snoopy menorah he’d used as a child. Each one told a story, each one held a memory, each one filled him with warmth and light and reminded him of the miracle of the season.
“This one’s my favorite,” Jessie said and pointed to his parents’ wedding menorah. “It’s shiny!”
“That’s from Grandma and Pop-Pop’s wedding,” he said, lifting it and handing it to her.
“It’s heavy,” she said.
“Because it’s brass.” He took the weighty menorah back from her.
“Do you and Mommy have one from your wedding?”
His throat closed. When Lauren died, his belief in miracles dimmed. Unable to look at it, he’d put it away. Besides, Jessie had a menorah they lit. But maybe he deprived her of…something? Before he could formulate an answer, the doorbell rang.

Let’s meet the author
Jennifer started telling herself stories as a little girl when she couldn’t fall asleep at night. Pretty soon, her head was filled with these stories and the characters that populated them. Even as an adult, she thinks about the characters and stories at night before she falls asleep or walking the dog. Eventually, she started writing them down. Her favorite stories to write are those with smart, sassy, independent heroines; handsome, strong and slightly vulnerable heroes; and her stories always end with happily ever after.
In the real world, she’s the mother of two amazing daughters and wife of one of the smartest men she knows. She believes humor is the only way to get through the day and does not believe in sharing her chocolate.
She writes contemporary romance, some of which are mainstream and some of which involve Jewish characters. She’s published with The Wild Rose Press and all her books are available through Amazon and Barnes & Noble.
With the release of my new Hanukkah novella, Waiting for a Miracle, Rhonda invited me to share some of my favorite Hanukkah traditions. So here goes:
- Spending time with my family. Although Hanukkah isn’t celebrated to the scale of Christmas, I do like to make sure I’m with my family each night as we light the candles on the menorah and exchange small gifts.
- Our menorahs. Yes, that’s plural. There are four of us, and we each have our own menorah to light. When my girls were little, they had children’s characters on them. As they got older, they wanted something different, so they have ones that look more grown up—confession: I miss their younger ones!
- The sixth night of Hanukkah. In my family, we’ve dedicated that night to charity. So instead of giving presents to each other, we donate to others. My kids have made knot blankets for the animal shelter, purchased toys for children less fortunate than they, and donated food to the food pantry.
- Fried Oreos. Every year, I make fried Oreos during Hanukkah and they are delicious!
- Extended family celebration. One weekend night, we get together with the grandparents and cousins and celebrate together. It’s fun seeing everyone!
- Friend celebration. We get together with family friends whom we’ve known forever and celebrate all together. Also a lot of fun.

Love the Hanukkah traditions, Jennifer! Best of luck with your book launch!
Loved hearing about your traditions, Jennifer. And I really like the way a certain night is dedicated to a certain part of family and/or life. Congrats on your new book. Wishing you many happy sales.
A heart-warming story!
I love your traditions and plan to include some for our holidays. Good luck with this book, Jennifer.
Nice blog post! I had never heard of everyone having their own menorahs. When my kids were away at college I did get them their own menorahs; but we just have the one family one and a felt one they used when they were little. We also have a tradition of buying toys for a toy drive and getting items for the local animal shelter.
I enjoyed reading about your Hanukkah celebrations, Jennifer! All the best with your new release.
It was interesting to read about the traditions, and even though I’m not Jewish, they resonate with me. Except for one. I dunno about those fried Oreos… HA!
Good luck with the new book. It sounds terrific. Who doesn’t love a miracle?
