What’s this nonsense about cozy sweaters, autumn leaves, and pumpkin spice? Here in Las Vegas, we have temps in the 90s—or the 30s, for those with a logical measurement system. Any pumpkin I consume this month will have to be frozen. Nevertheless, it’s time for our September gathering of the Insecure Writers Support Group, a wonderful place where you’ll find writerly wisdom, support, and a hand to hold when you’re ready to quit. Join us here.

The awesome co-hosts for the September 1 posting of the IWSG are Rebecca Douglass, T. Powell Coltrin @Journaling Woman, Natalie Aguirre, Karen Lynn, and C. Lee McKenzie! Be sure to give them a visit.

September 1 question – How do you define success as a writer? Is it holding your book in your hand? Having a short story published? Making a certain amount of income from your writing?

Baby making a fist. Text: Yes. Make that money."

I’ve been published for three years now, and I’m chugging (very slowly, uphill) toward the short-term goal of making three figures a month from my writing, then four… I hope to reach a place where my writing provides a comfy financial cushion. When will that happen? Well, this summer has been all about Hubs’ surgery, then moving from Washington to Nevada, so it won’t be this year! I should reach the ten-book mark in two years or less, so maybe then? Wish me luck!

This past weekend, Hubs and I took a road trip up to the San Francisco Bay Area to celebrate my mom’s 81st birthday! We missed her 80th due to the pandemic, so it was beyond lovely to have the whole family together again. We went for a walk around Stowe Lake in Golden Gate Park, probably my favorite place on the planet.

Then we drove down to Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park, near Santa Cruz, where we road a historical narrow-gauge railroad through virgin forest. Check out this cathedral growth, where new trees have sprung up in a circle around the site of their long-gone mother tree.

And now we’re back to moving chores. Our household goods arrive September 13th. It’ll be sooooo good to unpack and turn that empty new house into a home. Photos next month!

I wish you happy writing in September.
