Holy flaming s**tballs, I nearly forgot! It’s time for our October gathering of the Insecure Writers Support Group, a wonderful place where you’ll find writerly wisdom, support, and a hand to hold when you’re ready to quit. Join us here.
The effin’ awesome co-hosts for the October 6 posting of the IWSG are Jemima Pett, J Lenni Dorner, Cathrina Constantine, Ronel Janse van Vuuren, and Mary Aalgaard!
October 6 question – In your writing, where do you draw the line, with either topics or language?
Y’all, I write steamy romance. The lovely thing about the reomance genre is that there’s a flavor for everyone. My favorite flavor is spicy.
The way I see it, sexual intimacy is a normal, natural, delicious part of the falling-in-love process. Since falling in love is my favorite subject matter, you’ll never catch me writing a closed-door love scene. I do have my limits, though. While I firmly believe that whatever consenting adults do in the privacy of their own homes/cars/treehouses is perfectly fine, I won’t write about types of intimacy that don’t appeal to me personally. I don’t get the appeal of BDSM, so I’d do a lousy job writing about it. I’ll leave the hard-core kink to the kinksters.
Same goes for so-called naughty words. My characters have strong feelings and sometimes express themselves in strong language. I aim for authentic dialogue and don’t censor my characters’ curses if the occasion calls for such expression. I want nothing to do with old-fashioned double standards about who gets to say what and still be worthy of respect.
Besides, anyone who’s interested in my steamy stories isn’t likely to be squeamish about a few F-bombs.
Funny, though, my currect female protagonish is a pediatric nurse who once got her hand slapped for cursing on the job when a tiny patient bit her. She’s trained herself not to curse aloud, and coming up with creative curse substitutes has been both fun and challenging. I’m looking forward the novel’s climactic scene, when she finally unleashes some well-earned curses.
How’d you like a sample that’s light on the cursing but heavy on the steam? I’ve just released an exclusive free novella in the Bangers Tavern Romance series, available only to my newsletter subscribers. Said newsletter only comes out once a month, so I promise not to litter your inbox. 😉
Will Cupid’s misfire cost her everything?
Still stinging from a breakup, Carla Portofino wants nothing to do with Valentine’s Day. When her bestie drags her to Bangers Tavern’s Anti-Valentine’s Bash, Cupid gifts her a swoonworthy silver fox. Maybe a no-strings fling is the remedy for her tattered heart? He seems perfect, until a greedy real estate development scheme tangles them in more string than either can handle.
All Jeremy Franklin wants on Valentine’s Day is to escape the lovely-dovey hype. But his pushy friend insists on cheering him up with a trip to Bangers Tavern, where Jeremy meets Carla, a woman so enticing he simply must pursue her. Trouble is, his real estate firm has the hots for her building, and he’s not sure he can save her shop from their greedy grasp.
To keep her business, Carla must dare the hardest hurdle of all—trust the enemy. Will her silver fox prove a predator, or will Cupid’s arrow strike true?

I have a middle grader that uses very creative cursing to get his feelings across. One of his favorites: Cake on a Lake. 😉
Anna from elements of emaginette
I’d be hard pressed not to curse if a tiny person bit me!
I think you have way more leeway in what is acceptable when you are writing steamy romance for adult. Some swearing is probably expected by readers.
There are genres that demand or at least call for certain things. 😉 Without them the stories can lose their edge.
I had to come up with good “replacement” swear words after a massage therapist asked me what I did for a living. I told her I was a teacher and she said, “Obviously, these muscle knots only come from a clenched jaw.” ;D
I love ‘creative cursing.’ I have a brochure of Shakespearean curses and use some of them for my fantasy characters. Very liberating.
