I’m delighted to welcome back Canadian author C.D. Gallant-King, author of books that are hard to categorized but so easy to enjoy. You’ll love his latest release in the Gale Harbour series.

Newfoundland, Canada, 1993.

It’s been a year since a handful of kids defeated the Psycho Hose Beast in the sleepy town of Gale Harbour, Newfoundland. Our heroes have entered into the era of rollerblades, Super Nintendo and oversized plaid shirts… unless you’re a goth, then it’s the era of Maybelline eyeliner, boots with too many buckles, and infected safety-pin piercings.

Thirteen-year-old Niall O’Neil is navigating a blossoming relationship with his crush, Harper Jeddore. Unfortunately, the power that allowed them to defeat the monster from the deep is still within them, and they are no closer to understanding or controlling it. When just touching your girlfriend can kill innocent bystanders, it complicates the already precarious practice of teenage dating.

But lurking in the backdrop of teenage romance, a sinister power is growing in Gale Harbour, and dangerous people are turning up in the small town with possibly deadly intentions.

Will the kids defeat this new threat? What did the US Air Force leave in the abandoned Hansen Air Force base? What is a space-surfing butt monkey? And most importantly—will anyone get to touch a boob?

My review: 5 big, creepy stars!

Loooved this book! I also enjoyed the first in the Gale Harbour series, Psycho Hose Beast from Outer Space, but this story works well as a standalone.

I don’t make a habit of reading YA—not casting shade on those who do, it’s just not usually my cup of tea—but this hilarious tale of adventure, horror, aliens, and friendship was a delight from start to finish. Gallant-King handles the teen protagonists with such insight and tenderness. Skidmark was my favorite of the monster-hunting gang.

Fast-paced, original, and laugh-till-you-cry funny. Gallant-King’s horror/comedy delivers just the right blend of suspense, supremely creepy monsters, the overwhelming emotions of early adolescence, and small-town quirky. And for 90s kids nostalgic for their childhood, it even comes with a 90s playlist! This 70s kid enjoyed the added atmosphere. Highly recommend!

Meet the author

Author C.D. Gallant-King

C.D. Gallant-King writes comic horror and fantasy stories in a variety of settings and genres. He was born and raised in Newfoundland, Canada in a town eerily similar to Gale Harbour, before moving to Toronto where he tried to be an actor and a rock star. We don’t talk about that. He now lives in Ottawa and is a happy husband and father of two.

He has self-published four novels, including HELL COMES TO HOGTOWN, which was a semi-finalist in Mark Lawrence’s 2018 Self-Published Fantasy Blog-Off. His short fiction has appeared in multiple anthologies by Mystery & Horror LLC and Dancing Lemur Press, as well as in The Weird and Whatnot magazine.

A few questions for the author:

What’s your favorite part of the writing life?

I really like having control over the story, and how I will tell it. In my real job, so much of what I do depends on other people – I rely on them to get the materials and data that I need, and exactly what I do each day is highly dependent on what someone asks for at the time. With writing, I can write what I want, when I want to write it. Except for interview questions.

What do you do for fun when you’re not writing?

What is this “fun” you speak of? Seriously, I don’t have much free time these days, and what little of it I do get goes into writing. I do enjoy table-top gaming when I can find the time – board games and role-playing games (like Dungeons & Dragons). I enjoy the puzzle aspects of it as well as the story-telling, so really these games just use the same skills as writing.

Do you have any particular writing quirks? A special object, snack, music, etc. that helps you with your writing process?

I am a big fan of music while I’m writing, and I tailor the music to suit the book I’m working on. I have 90s-music playlists for the Gale Harbour books, and if you’ve read them, it should be pretty obvious which songs are on that list (fun side note – if you search my book names on Spotify, you can actually find those playlists and listen along when you read!) I also listen to music really loud when I’m writing, usually with headphones on. My wife doesn’t understand how I can concentrate, but I find it helps me block out the rest of the world to focus on the task at hand.

Authors always seem to have a teetering To Be Read pile. What’s in yours?

So much stuff. I just picked up the first Witcher book that I’ve been itching to check out. I started J.S. Morin’s Black Ocean series that I’ve been meaning to get back to. I have The Sandman Volume 2 waiting for me on Audible. I’ve got a couple of books on 17-18th century sailing that I want to read, hopefully as research for a new book I’m thinking of writing. And those are just the ones I can see from where I’m sitting!

What makes you put down a book without finishing?

I’ve had trouble finishing a lot of books lately, though it’s rarely the fault of the author. I’m just so distracted and tired all the time, I really have trouble focussing on reading. I’ve been trying to focus on lighter-fare, with shorter, faster-paced books. No Tolstoy or Tolkien for me these days I’m afraid.

Which authors have inspired you?

Kurt Vonnegut is my favourite author – his mixture of dark, heavy topics mixed with satire and humour speaks so deeply to me. Terry Pratchett is my spirit animal, though, he had a way to turn a phrase so insightfully and witty at the same time. Unfortunately, I’m not British enough to write like him (see also: PG Wodehouse and Jerome K. Jerome). Christopher Moore is also an influence of mine, especially in my cruder works. He paints exquisitely with foul language.
