Alas, taking care of a seriously ill family member has kept me away from the blog for a while. This interview with romantic suspense author Brenda Whiteside is a delightful way to come back! I hope you’ll check out her latest release, The Curse of Wolf Falls, the third book in her MacKenzie Chronicles series-–because who doesn’t love a mystery? And a second chance romance?
Secrets can protect what the truth will destroy.
Elidor MacKenzie has a gift she can’t return—the ability to absorb the joy, pain, and suffering of others. She’s spent her life running from what she considers her curse. Now, her best friend is dead, and she alone holds the key to an archaeological discovery that could destroy a culture. With newfound inner peace, Elidor has returned home to make amends and guard the secret revelation. But greed-driven scavengers have followed her. Once again, the energies of Joshua will stir the hurricane, with her at the deadly center.
Jules never got over Elidor. Twenty years and a famous journalism career later, he’s back in Joshua—and so is his first love. If his heart can stand the torture, he’ll risk reviving their relationship. But saving Elidor from herself and the secret she won’t give up may be the death of them both.
With Jules by her side, Elidor is determined to outrun the scavengers, guard the secret, and renew their love. But fate is coming after her, and there’s nowhere the couple can hide.

Meet the Author
Brenda Whiteside is the award-winning author of romantic suspense and cozy mystery. She’s penned a couple of historicals and straight romance, but she’s found villains and danger make a good story that much better. After living in six states and two countries—so far—she and her husband have settled in Central Arizona. They admit to being gypsies at heart so won’t discount the possibility of another move. They share their home with a rescue dog named Amigo. While FDW fishes, Brenda writes.
Some questions for Brenda:
Is this a standalone story or part of a series? If the latter, what’s the connection to previous books/future books in the series?
Curse of Wolf Falls is the third book in the MacKenzie Chronicles. The books each feature one of the MacKenzie siblings, all raised in Joshua, Arizona. Joshua is an 1800s mining town, turned ghost town, reborn as a hippie haven, and now a tourist town, clinging to the side of Spirit Mountain. In the sixties, Frank and Susie Muse are some of the first hippies to settle in Joshua and revitalize the town. They raise Magpie, Harlan, and Elidor with the influence of the hippie era and wide-open acceptance of all things unusual in this universe. In this third story, Elidor has come home after many years away to make amends and confront her inner demons. Those pale compared to the scavengers who follow her and an old love who has also come home.
What do you love about the genre you write in?
Romantic Suspense has a lot of depth and gives me room to write character driven stories. I love delving into the evil minds of villains and creating suspense while weaving a love story through the conflict.
Do you write in other genres?
I’ve penned a few romances, and, most recently, I am co-authoring a cozy mystery series, The Chocolate Martini Sisters Mystery. I’m having a great time working with Joyce Proell. Quirky characters are right up my alley while Joyce is an excellent mystery writer.
What’s your favorite part of the writing life?
I love to play in the dirt (my husband’s description of my pastime). What has kept me in the dirt these last couple of years is my fairy garden. My granddaughter got me started, but she tired of her own after a year or so. I tired of mine being down on the ground and subject to leaves and critters and the harsh summers here in Arizona. I now have a potted fern fairy garden situated on tree stumps. Critters don’t eat ferns, and the fairies are much happier at knee level where we can converse easier.
Authors always seem to have a teetering To Be Read pile. What’s in yours?
Aren’t eReaders great for those of us who pile up the books. Although, I have to tell you, I have a special shelf and a couple of bins of the real paper kind that are my treasures—especially autographed books. Right now, I have a print copy of Sandford’s Bloody Genius by my bed to read. Love Sandford. I don’t hoard as many books in my reader as some. I’m currently reading Twilight Deception by Jannine Gallant. Waiting for me I have Troubled Waters by Alison MacKenzie, Newsletter Ninja, Let’s Get Digital, Pam Dickens Keeps Christmas All the Year, A Deadly Truth, and Goodbye Emily (which I’ve read but want to read again).
Which authors have inspired you?
In sticking with modern era authors, these authors write in different genres, but their creativity and page-turner stories make me want to write up to their level: Dick Francis, Maeve Binchy, Diana Gabaldon, Michael Crichton, Suzanne Collins

Thanks for having me, Sadira, To correct a typo, Troubled Waters is by Alison Henderson. And playing in the dirt is what I do in my off time. Ha! It’s early, and I’ve not had enough coffee.
I’m always glad to support romance authors!
